All tests were done in Vista 圆4, because CrossFireX is Vista-exclusive, and with a beta Catalyst 8.1 driver modded with CrossFireX support. I recall a rather heated thread not too long ago where a few blokes had some thick-headedness regarding video gaming performance scaling beyond two GPUs. You can mix and match any way you want with these. The platform consists of an AMD Phenom 9900 (2.6GHz), 790FX-based motherboard and a blend of Radeon HD 3870X2, 38 cards. There is especially one thing worth mentioning, and it is that DirectX 10 games are not scaling to the same degree as DirectX 9 games. The scaling is there though and it does look promising before the launch. CrossFireX Quad will deliver significant performance improvements in a number of applications. The above statement proves to be true as the games supplied show a variety of scaling. Last night I replaced the thermal gunk on the 3870x and they run much cooler now (one 3870X2 chip was idling at 77Deg, now its idling at 56-58deg) and reinstalling the 3870 was easy and didnt require a driver reisntall and gave a 20 increase in my 3dMark Vantage High GPU score which is reasonable enough. Users with any combination of a ATI Radeon HD 3870, ATI Radeon HD 3850, and ATI Radeon HD 3870 X2 graphics accelerators running with 3 or 4 GPUs will be able to run in CrossFireX Quad mode (when used in a CrossFireX compatible PC). The five apps we’ve chosen are intended to be a fair representation of the CrossFireX experience in general.” While these apps show good scaling, we haven’t selected these because they represent the “best-case scenario” – in fact, there are other games that exhibit better scaling, as your testing down the road will show. ”We’ve chosen some apps that demonstrate the performance that these new configurations afford gamers, and the scalability that can be seen when moving from a single GPU to four GPUs. We’re getting closer to CrossFireX though, and the previews posted do show promise. Not even when AMD launched Radeon HD 3870X2 we had working CrossFireX drivers. CrossFireX was suppose to be one of the big attractions of the AMD platform, but the drivers weren’t ready when AMD launched Phenom and the Radeon HD 3000 series in November last year. yes its possible crossfirex allows you to connect 2/3/4 of any of the rv670 cores together so yes you could have a 3870x2 and a 3870 in 3 way crossfire.

The only drawback is that you have to test it as it comes and with the games supplied. At the other end of the spectrum we have two HD 3870 cards running in Crossfire. AMD CrossFireX is due next month, but already, AMD has sent out systems for testing. What we have with us is the HD 3870 X2 from MSI coming in at 860MHz core and 1800MHz DDR on the 1GB of GDDR3 memory.
